Ms. Novak and I are planning a really cool HOT block together. We are going to be creating found object puppets. This idea came about when Ms. Novak learned about the artist Ashley Bryan. He has been creating found object puppets for many years. He gives them African names and creates poems to describe them. Ms. Novak's class will be doing the same. I am very excited about this collaborative project.
Some pics of Ms. Novak's students creating their own found object puppets, and a sneak peek at some finished puppets.
2013-14 School Year
HOT Block with Mrs. Abbott I had a great experience co-teaching with first & second grade teacher; Mrs. Abbott, for my first HOT block. Once a week I went into their classroom to teach the students about drawing. Our focus was on Maurice Sendak's illustrations, in particular his creatures and wild things. Students learned about wild features designed and drew their own creature. As the art piece is finished, students then wrote descriptive piece about their creature incorporating feelings, powerful words and description. We also were very fortunate to be able to bring the kids on a field trip to visit the New Britain Museum of Art to view the Maurice Sendak exhibit. We also had a tour through the museum and stopped to learn about various works of art. It was such a rich experience for these students and we all learned a lot. They are in the final stages of publishing their work from this experience. I can't wait to read them all!
